Where we Meet...
How does it work ? ...
You may join Cub Scouts anytime. We have our Recruitment (School Night) in September where parents and their sons can learn more about the program. Check the Pack Calendar for the date and time of this event. In addition to our monthly meetings during the school year, we hold many special activities. Click on the "Activities & Events" link for more information.
Cub Scouting is designed for school aged boys first through fifth grades. In Pack 554 we use rank advancement, awards and FUN to achieve character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.
Everything a Cub does to advance is designed to aid in his personal growth. Advancement is the process by which a boy progresses from badge to badge, learning new skills as he goes. As we help our Cub Scouts advance, we are always mindful that badges are simply a means to an end - and not an end in themselves.
Cub Scouting is the stepping-stone to Boy Scouting which promotes, through organization and cooperation with other agencies, the ability of boys to do things for themselves and others. It trains them in scout-craft, and teaches them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues, using the methods which were in common use by Boy Scouts 100 years ago.You can learn more about Cub Scouting by visiting the National Scouting web site.
Pack, Den, Rank - What are they ? ...
Your son will be a member of a Pack. A Pack is made up of groups called Dens. A Den is a group of boys that are all the same Rank. There are 4 ranks in Cub Scouts:Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos.
First grade boys start as the rank of TIGER. All of the boys in their den are also Tigers and they follow a program that is designed for first graders.
The WOLF rank is for second grade boys. They belong to a Wolf Den and follow a program that is designed for second grade boys.
In third grade, boys are considered a member of the BEAR rank. They are in a den with other third graders and the program they follow is for their grade as well.
Both fourth and fifth grade boys are members of the WEBELO rank. Their den (or patrol) would be made up of boys in their same grade. The Webelos program is an 18 month program that spans the time your son is in fourth grade and into Februray of fifth grade at which time, your son would graduate into Boy Scouts.
Den Meeting vs Pack Meeting ...
Two - Three times a month, the Den will have a Den Meeting. These are the meetings where the boys do the fun things needed to earn awards, play games, make crafts, practice songs or skits. Once a month, usually the last Tuesday of the month, all the Dens meet together in what is known as a Pack Meeting. At this meeting, we may have a special theme, be entetained by an outside program, hand out awards, do skits, sing songs or visit a program outside the school.
